I hardly go on Facebook, but I was just on it and I awkwardly came across something I posted in my "Notes" section 4 years ago, in February 2009. I titled it "21 things I'll do before age 21 :)". {{I was 18 at the time}}. As I was reading through it I mentally crossed off the things that I actually accomplished, and felt a little disappointed about the ones I never did. Of course, after I wrote it I completely forgot about it and never actively pursued any of my time-sensitive goals...but I am happy about the ones that I inadvertently achieved. Here's my list, and my thoughts on each...
I'm thinking I need to write a new dream list that doesn't have a time limit.
21 things I'll do before age 21 :)
1. Take a road trip.
Mapping the route, singing at the top of our lungs, and discovering new towns with my friends will be the ultimate bonding experience. Who's up for it? ;)
>> This one I did with my fiance before we were engaged...We drove to Vegas on a whim for a concert and had a blast.
2. Learn to play a musical instrument.
Guitar!!!
>> My first failure :( The only musical instrument I know how to play is the recorder, which hardly counts.
3. Go skinny-dipping!
Ahhh.
>> Uhm nope.
4. Save $1,000.
Just seeing that big number in my bank account will be the best. Yee :)
>> Yes. Definitely. Many times has my bank account seen that number and seen it go away as well.
5. Get something pierced.
I know it'll hurt, but I've never done anything like that.
>> Nose piercing babyyy.
6. Buy a lottery ticket.
But just one. Everyone should take one million-to-one shot in their lives — it's fun to dream such a big and outrageous dream. I'm not one for gambling, but what if I win?!
>> Nah.
7. Win an award.
I want to be the best at something.
>> Uhm...does Dean's Honor Roll count?
8. Say "I love you" to someone I've never said it to.
It takes courage to be vulnerable. But it's the only way to create the possibility that someone will love me back the way I deserve.
>> Since I wrote this 4 years ago, I met, fell in love, and have gotten engaged to the man of my dreams. This was a touchy subject back in the day, but now I am in the place I'm supposed to be. I have goals, ambitions, and plans, but now they incorporate another person, which I am so happy about. I love myself for letting a man like Chreston into my life, and for knowing I can be 110% myself around him.
You never know when you'll get into a situation where you may need to know how. But, I don't want to learn on my dad's stinky work truck.
>> I haven't done this nor do I have any interest in doing so.
10. Milk a cow.
I am terrified of animals bigger than me, but conquering this small thing might help me do even bigger scary stuff.
>> Nope, which is pretty sad because I grew up in Galt AKA Cow Town.
I'll feel better about it.
>> Yes. I do feel better.
12. Have my fortune told.
Sure, it's kind of silly. But doing it will really be a reminder that in the end, only I hold the power to chart my own destiny.
>> I still really really want to do this.
13. Plan a party.
I can't believe I've never done it. I didn't have a quinceanera, so I was totally robbed of that experience. And I'm already 18, so maybe I'll have to plan this for someone else. ;)
>>...I'm in the middle of planning my wedding. I think it's safe to say that counts.
I want to be able to have someone that will love me unconditionally and cuddle with, is that sad?
>> I had a rabbit named Buster Baxter & I miss him </3
15. Go skydiving.
Okay, it might sound cheesy, but I think everyone without a heart condition should do it. I hear it's the closest feeling to flying.
>> Still on my Must Do! List.
16. Use my formal dresses again.
It sucks to only use them once, and I think it'll be nice to feel like a princess again.
>> Yes, yes, yes. Did I mention my fiance is a hot Marine that takes me to the USMC Ball every year? No? Ok, well...he does.
17. See the ocean...and actually swim in it.
I've been to the beach so many times, and I always felt so small next to this huge, timeless thing — and it inspires me to make the most of my life. Even though it's filled with whale utereses.
>> Yes. I've even been in two oceans, total overachiever in this one.
18. Have fireworks for my birthday.
I wish I was born on July 4th, but I'm hopeful I can get to see fireworks for my birthday...in September.
>> I'm kind of setting myself up for failure on this one.
19. See one thing that is "the world's largest."
Even if it's just a frying pan — at least I can say I've seen it.
>> Largest tree? Yes!
20. Leave the country...to somewhere I am not a citizen.
So that cancels out Mexico and around the U.S. Going somewhere makes people realize how narrow their world really is — and I know that travel is the best way I could expand mine.
>>Not yet, but this is probably number one on my Still To-Do List. I need to go somewhere and be able to marvel at something. I want culture, food, people, language, all thrown at me. One day.
I'm just now starting to feel perfect as I am because I have imperfections — not in spite of them.
>> I have definitely learned that in order to truly love someone else, one has to accept herself for who she is, not for who she wishes she could be.
on this one..18. Have fireworks for my birthday.
ReplyDeleteI wish I was born on July 4th, but I'm hopeful I can get to see fireworks for my birthday...in September.
>> I'm kind of setting myself up for failure on this one.
